Characteristics of Iron & Steel:

Iron: strong in compression, breaks without warning, it has a lot of carbon.

Steel: It's weight that cast iron, strong in compression and tension, it get rust and lose strength in extremely high temperatures.

POST-READING:

“the old cast iron buildings died out. I'm not really sure whether the new skyscrapers killed them, or the new esthetics”

I think the steel was widely substituted for cast iron, because it brings a lot of adventages to the manufactures and especially to the modern architecture.
